Ubuntu Phone OS Demonstration by Mark Shuttleworth at CES 2013

I had the pleasure of meeting Mark Shuttleworth tonight, and this was a quick demonstration he gave me of the Ubuntu Phone OS running on top of a GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

More Information:

Mark mentioned that the Galaxy Nexus would be able to run the full desktop version of Ubuntu Phone OS, but it wouldn’t be optimal without at least a dual core, 1.5Ghz processor in your device.
I tried to get my hands on the device, but they wouldn’t allow it, unfortunately.
Shuttleworth also mentioned that a brand new build of Ubuntu Phone OS went out today (1/8/13) and that it significantly improved performance, and that things were only going to get better.
I should be able to get more information, if needed, at their booth tomorrow during the actual conference

What about Ubuntu TV? Any word on that?

  In case you didn’t know, it is called Unity TV, and that interface is accessed by ‘docking’ the Ubuntu phone with the TV which isn’t possible at the moment. You can also install it onto your TV through the Internet apparently but I don’t think it is easy to do.

So do you load this on a working phone with service? Do you have to configure to get phone calls? Can a do this to existing phones and have calls work?

  You can’t install it easily at the moment, just wait until an Ubuntu Phone comes out

How about the t989 Hercules for T-Mobile I think is a great candidate to run Ubuntu.

I’d probably have to root my Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE to work with Ubuntu OS (thereby killing the warranty), but would it work on that phone? Might be the only thing that’ll bring me back to Ubuntu on the desktop–I just bought a new laptop and stuck Mint 14 Cinnamon on it. Otherwise I’ll wait until my contract ends in July 2015 and see how far along Ubuntu has gotten on the phone by then.

      Meh, if you have a decent PC it doesn’t make much odds. And if you are on 12.04 you can use Unity 2D.

  If you compiled and rooted it, yes, but it isn’t easy. Just wait until Ubuntu phones come out and then sell your Lumia to some Windows fanboy

      No, I’m saying that you could install it because it is open-source it is probably POSSIBLE to install if you know how to code, compile and root OSes onto a phone.
      
      However I can’t find the source code anywhere so you would have to adapt your own ‘Ubuntu Touch’ from Ubuntu Desktop.
